This morning, since it was still raining (shocker) and I wasn't ready to work out yet, I made the puppies some treats :D I ended making double this amount and taking some to Jeni's dog, Whiskey. The whole time I was mixing the batter, the puppies were at my feet- licking their little snouts and drooling. Here's the recipe:
Tail-wagging treats (they're people-friendly, too)
-1 cup whole wheat flour
-1/3 cup peanut butter
-1 mashed banana
-2 eggs (1 for dough, 1 for egg wash)
-1/3 cup ground flaxseed
-splash of milk (maybe 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup, just to moisten the dough so it's not as dry)
Preheat oven to 350 and grease two cookie sheets. Combine all of the above ingredients (only using one egg) in a mixing bowl. Evenly press dough onto a flat surface and cut into shapes using small cookie cutters (I did stars, hearts and jalapenos). Place shapes on the cookie sheets and make an egg wash with 1 egg a tbs of water. Brush the tops of the treats with the egg wash-- this will help them to brown up and have a nice golden color when baked. Bake for 15 minutes at 350 and get ready for lots of wet puppy kisses :D
Here's Viesa shaking for her treat:
For b-fast, I had 1.5 servings of Fiber One with 1/2 cup fat free milk and a nanner, and the classic Eating Bender combo of egg whites and Laughing Cow (covered with Texas Pete).
After munching, I decided to hit the gym but the stormy weather has a tendency to hinder my motivation (I always want to curl up with a blanket and watch SATC), so I went and got some magazines to get me through it- Fitness (the one women's fitness magazine that I don't subscribe to) and OK. Working out costs me $7.58 today, but it was a total blessing because 6 minutes into my run, my ipod died! I need to charge that little thing.
I did 4.26 miles in 50 minutes (run 6.0 for 3 min and walk 4.0 for 1.5 mins, all with 3.5% incline) and got a pretty decent workout. Not as great as I would have liked it to be, but considering the circumstances (and the weather!) it was bueno. When I got home, I was ready to snack and had an Oatmeal-Raisin Luna Bar and a South Beach cottage cheese.
I've stayed away from Luna bars for a little while since the last time I ate one (a Peanut Butter Cookie Luna) it was disgusting and artificial-tasting. I think I've been spoiled by Pure Protein, Larabars and Z-bars.... Even though I'm not a huge fan anymore, the Oatmeal-Raisin Luna isn't so bad. I'm thinking that this one and the Chai Tea flavored ones are still worth the occasion buy.
Well I'm off to finally work on some homework. It feels so weird to be back in school after my year hiatus after finishing my Bachelor's. The vacation had to end sometime, I guess ;)
Hope you're having a SUNNY and wonderful weekend!
Much love,
G

Aww, such cute dog treats!!
Hooray for an Eating Bender-inspired breakfast!!
Ahh, so sorry that your i-Pod quit on you :0( Definitely keep that necessity charged!!
LARABARS REIGN SUPREME!!!!! Hehe, you knew I'd say that ;0)
Good luck with your schoolwork!!
Those homeade dog treats are such a great idea! Our dog ADORES peanut butter, so I'm sure she'd love 'em - I'll have to make a batch.
Regarding Luna Bars, I couldn't agree with you more! There is an unidentifiable underlying taste to all of the flavors that I'm just not loving anymore. I ate these a lot in college, so maybe I just overdid it. I agree with veggiegirl that Larabars cannot be beaten!
Good luck with the beginning of your Masters' course load - it's totally worth it :)
i used to LOVE luna bars and ate them all the time. then i tried some of the others (clif, kashi, lara) and lunas just don't compare. i remember that oatmeal cookie was always one of my favorites though.
those doggie treats sound so good---i might make them even though i dont have a dog ; )
So sweet that you made puppy treats! My golden is a treat fiend, I will have to bake up some of these!
I don't love the Lunas either (or Laras, for that matter). I ate them when I was vegan. I really would never buy them, I'd probably eat a free one though. :-D.
I hatehatehate when my IPOD dies. I am a music girl, I don't dig grunting, or street noise, depending on where I'm workin out. And soundsystems at gyms are usually the pits, if they are even playing something worth listening to!
*I am going to add you to my blogroll, I love how similar our workout and nutrition philosophies/habits seem! Too bad you're not in UTAH!
I am
That is really sweet. I've been promising my brother I would make his dog Maggie some treats for a year. Yo've inspired me to do it.
how cute! LOVE the treaties! :) My parent's puggle would adore those!
Those treats are too cute! How do you have time to fit in exercise, cooking, and school? I feel like I never have time for exercising or cooking with school and always grab processed food instead-yuck!
How do you make your oatmeal breakfast cookies? Also, do you think yoga is sufficient with cardio? I have never loved weight training. What makes you enjoy it so much? Sorry for the millions of questions. I just discovered your blog recently and love it!
I just showed my husband your post, because this morning I told him I thought I should make our puppy homemade dog treats. He doubted it could be done. I might try to make these tomorrow.
Yay! Thanks for the shout out, Gina!
Those dog/people treats are awesome!! What a great idea to make something the whole family can enjoy ;o)
Hope your Saturday went fabulously!
The treats are adorable!
I've never been a fan of luna bars either, they taste like bird food to me (well I imagine, I don't eat bird food!:)
Hope everything goes well with school!
hey twinksy-thank you so much! i just added you to mine, too :D i'm hoping we'll get back to az pretty soon and if we ever go to utah, we'll definitely have to chill- we definitely have similar fitness and nutrition philosophies
hi lauren- thank you so much for reading! balancing school, fitness and cooking can definitely be a little complicado, but all it takes is some planning. i plan our dinners on sunday for the entire week and get all of the ingredients dor dinners, b-fast and lunches on sunday when i do the big weekly grocery trip. every night before i go to bed, i try to plan out what i'm going to eat the next day so that i'm less tempted to stray from the plan.
as far as yoga goes, i only do it for meditation purposes.. i feel like lifting weights gives me a much better workout. i didn't like lifting weights until i saw the results!! that's all the motivation i need :) it definitely becomes more fun with time and when you can visually see the benefits.
here's the recipe for the cookie:
1/4 cup oats
1 tbs peanut butter
cinnamon
1/8 cup raisins
1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
a little Splenda (or sweetener of your choice)
1/8 - 1/4 cup fat free milk
- Mix the oats, cinnamon, protein powder and sweetener in a bowl until the peanut butter is crumbly. Add in the raisins. Add the milk (use 1/8 cup if you want the cookie to be harder and more cookie-like or 1/4 cup if you want it a little softer) and stir to combine. Press the mixture down on a small plate, making it even and round. Leave in the fridge overnight. The next morning, grab a spoon and enjoy :)
let me know if you try it! i'd love to hear what you think!!!
also, let me know if any of you make the puppy treats!!! hopefully your babies will like them as much as ours did :)
enjoy the rest of your weekend!
xoxo
Awww, how sweet of you to make some treats for your dogs, and in such pretty shapes! And even better that people can eat them, too! I might make them because they sound so good.
haha love the dog treats! Luna bars are not my favorite either, I've tried most of the flavors and there are maybe 2 or 3 that I find appealing. Anyways, hope your weekend has been fab! :)
I love dogs... and yours are so cute!!
I have been reading you blog and I saw you like whey protein. I need to buy more whey, and this time, I want buy vanilla flavor, do you have a favorite brand??
Have a great Sunday!!!
Thanks
yay i love to make my doggies treats, too! :) thanks for this recipe.
hey fightwiththescale- the puppies said thank you :D as for the protein, i really like designer whey. it doesn't taste the best but the nutrtional info is amazing and you can always add some cinnamon or mix it in a smoothie to make it taste better :)
Oh my gosh, homemade dog treats! I have to make these for the Frankster. I think hes becoming a little fatty though so I will have to maybe cut the recipe down or I'll feed them all to him :)
